Bainum Family Foundation
A 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to working alongside communities to create lasting systems change for the well-being of children and families. Funded and led by the family since its inception.

For more than five decades, the Bainum Family Foundation has invested in the well-being of children and families, evolving its strategy over the years to reflect lessons learned and evolving community needs.
Centuries of racist policies and practices continue to disrupt every aspect of development and well-being for Black and brown children throughout the United States. Far too often, these children and their families have been intentionally denied resources and a say in the decisions that impact their lives. The Bainum Family Foundation aims to change these unjust conditions and mitigate their consequences.
Tremendous power, expertise, and lived experience exists within every community. The adults who nurture Black and brown children—family members, teachers, and other caregivers—want the best for their children and actively seek the solutions and conditions they need in order to thrive.
The Bainum Family Foundation builds on these strengths by investing in lasting systems change to benefit communities experiencing racial and economic disparities. Bringing its resources and support, the foundation works alongside these communities to jointly identify comprehensive solutions, both immediate and long term.

Artis Senior Living
A leading developer and operator of memory care and assisted living communities nationwide. Artis was founded by the Bainum family in 2012 and builds upon decades of experience.

Artis Senior Living is a leading developer-owner-operator of Memory Care and Assisted Living residences with 25 communities operating in 11 states. Most Artis communities are primarily focused on caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
Each Assisted Living and Memory Care community is constructed from the ground up, with buildings and grounds designed with the unique features residents need to be safe, allowing them freedom of movement, both indoors and out. This affords residents a better quality of life than most can safely get at home and allows Artis associates to care for the residents as human beings, not define them by their diagnosis.

The Baltimore Banner
A local online news organization focused on strengthening the Baltimore community through trustworthy, quality journalism. Founded by Stewart Bainum, Jr., in 2021.

The Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism is a nonprofit organization founded by Stewart Bainum, Jr., to bring high-quality local journalism to Baltimore and central Maryland. It was started as a response to local news being under siege across the country, with many news organizations shutting down, downsizing to survive, or being purchased by hedge funds with a single-minded focus on the bottom line. Despite Baltimore’s proud history of great journalism, the region’s publications have not been spared the realities of the news industry.
In June 2022, The Venetoulis Institute launched The Baltimore Banner to fulfill its mission. The Banner is a multi-platform online news operation covering a broad range of topics, from local and state government to business, sports, education, culture, and the arts. The Banner seeks to create a vibrant, trustworthy, and sustainable news organization that reinvents what local journalism can be.

Choice Hotels International
One of the largest and most successful lodging franchisors in the world. Choice currently franchises more than 7,000 hotels, representing nearly 570,000 rooms, in more than 40 countries and territories. White Oak Enterprises maintains a significant ownership stake in the company.

Choice’s business began as a marketing cooperative formed by a group of seven motor court owners in 1939. Operating under the name Quality Courts United–the nation’s first hotel chain–the owners sought to refer their business to each other’s hotels and establish service standards for their properties to better meet the needs and expectations of their guests.
Stewart Bainum, Sr., opened his first hotel in Silver Spring, Maryland, in 1957. He franchised his first Quality Courts motel in the early 1960s and within the decade had merged his business with Quality Inns, subsequently assuming the role of President and CEO and relocating the company’s headquarters to Maryland. In 1990, Quality Inns International changed its name to Choice Hotels International.
Today, Choice is one of the largest and most successful lodging franchisors in the world. Choice-branded hotels represent the full spectrum of lodging offerings, from limited-service to full-service hotels in the upscale, midscale, extended-stay, and economy segments. These hotels provide business and leisure travelers with a range of high-quality, high-value lodging options throughout the United States and internationally.
